Coffee types explained simply: there are dozens of varieties, but most fall into a few key categories based on how they're brewed and what's in the cup.

I'm Janice Kuz, owner of Flinders Lane Cafe in Maroochydore, and with over 20 years in hospitality, I've seen how a solid grasp of coffee types explained can completely change the way you experience your daily cup. Let's get into it.

Coffee Types Explained: From Bean to Brew

Before we can talk about the art of the pour, we have to talk about the bean. Everything you taste in your cup starts with the biology of the coffee plant and how those beans are treated before they even reach our grinders in Maroochydore.

There are four main types of coffee beans grown globally: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa. However, in the specialty coffee world, the conversation usually centres on the first two. According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), Arabica accounts for approximately 70% of the world’s coffee production. It is prized for its smooth, sweet flavour profile and complex acidity.

Robusta, making up the remaining 30%, is a hardier plant with double the caffeine content. While it is often used in instant coffee or as a traditional component in Italian espresso blends to create a thick crema, it can sometimes carry a more bitter, rubbery note compared to the refined sweetness of Arabica.

Once the beans are harvested, the roast level dictates the final vibe of your brew. Light roasts are floral and acidic, retaining the most "origin" character. Medium roasts (our favourite for a balanced Flat White) bring out chocolatey and nutty notes. Dark roasts are oily and bold, offering a smoky, heavy-bodied experience.

The Foundation: Espresso and Black Coffee Types Explained

At the heart of almost every drink on our menu is the espresso. It is a concentrated shot of coffee made by forcing nearly boiling, pressurised water through finely-ground beans. A perfect shot should take between 20 to 35 seconds to pull, resulting in a rich liquid topped with a golden layer of foam called "crema."

If you prefer your coffee without milk, you have a few classic options:

  • Espresso (Short Black): A single 30ml shot of pure coffee. It is the purest way to taste the roast.
  • Doppio: Simply a double shot of espresso.
  • Long Black: This is a staple on the Sunshine Coast. We pour two shots of espresso over hot water. By adding the coffee to the water (rather than the other way around), we preserve the crema and the delicate aromatics.
  • Americano: Often confused with the Long Black, an Americano is usually espresso with more water added afterward. It’s a lighter, more diluted drink that originated when American soldiers in WWII wanted to stretch their espresso rations.
  • Batch Brew: This is filter coffee at its best. It uses a slower gravity-fed brewing process, resulting in a clean, tea-like body that highlights the subtle notes of single-origin beans.
  • Ristretto: A "restricted" shot. We use the same amount of coffee but half the water, resulting in a sweeter, more intense hit with less bitterness.

Milky Favourites: Latte, Flat White, and Cappuccino

This is where most of our community finds their "daily usual." The difference between these three icons comes down to one thing: the texture and ratio of the steamed milk.

The Latte is the big brother of the milk world. It consists of roughly 1/3 espresso and 2/3 steamed milk, topped with a thin (about 1cm) layer of microfoam. It’s smooth, creamy, and the perfect canvas for latte art.

The Flat White is an Australian legend. It uses a similar amount of espresso to a latte but has less milk and almost no "stiff" foam. The Cappuccino is the classic Italian treat. Traditionally, it follows a 1:1:1 ratio: 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 thick, airy milk foam. In Australia, we love to top it with a dusting of chocolate powder. It’s the ultimate comfort cup.

Short and Punchy: Macchiato and Piccolo Coffee Types Explained

Sometimes you want the creaminess of milk without the volume of a full cup. That’s where the "shorts" come in.

  • Macchiato: The word means "stained" or "spotted" in Italian. A traditional Macchiato is a shot of espresso "stained" with a tiny dollop of foamed milk. It cuts the acidity of the espresso just enough without diluting the strength.
  • Piccolo: Think of this as a baby Latte. It’s a ristretto shot served in a small glass (about 100ml) topped with warm, silky milk. It’s punchy, sophisticated, and very popular with those who want a quick caffeine kick with a smooth finish.
  • Cortado: Similar to a Piccolo, this Spanish favourite uses a 1:1 ratio of espresso to steamed milk. The milk isn't as frothy as a latte; it's simply used to "cut" the espresso's intensity.

  • Cold Brew: This is not just "cold coffee." We steep coarse grounds in cold water for 12 to 24 hours. This slow process results in a brew that is naturally sweet, very low in acidity, and packs a serious caffeine punch without the bitterness.
  • Nitro Brew: Cold brew infused with nitrogen gas, giving it a creamy, Guinness-like mouthfeel and a frothy head.

  • Mocha: The perfect marriage of coffee and chocolate. We combine espresso with chocolate and steamed milk for a dessert-like experience.

  • Green Matcha: For those looking for a different kind of buzz, our Matcha is earthy and vibrant.
  • Affogato: More of a dessert than a drink, this is a shot of hot espresso poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
